Cortona

Tuscany

A town with legendary origins, Cortona is situated on the top of a hill 500 metres above sea level, on the border between Tuscany and Umbria, overlooking a harmonious landscape across a large valley framed by hills.
The town is surrounded by imposing walls, which contain within them important Romanesque-Gothic churches including Sant’Agostino and San Francesco designed by a follower of St Francis of Assisi, Elias of Cortona, as well as historic medieval and Renaissance buildings. The town’s layout, with typical narrow cobbled streets, enlivened by numerous bars, cafés, shops and restaurants, is distinct for the considerable difference in height between the high part and the low part. Farm produce and wines of excellence form the basis of a varied, delicious cuisine not limited only to traditional dishes.
